Social Places reports that AI search assistants return one or two business names instead of ten blue links. More than half of locations performing well on Google today can be entirely absent from AI responses. The selection happens invisibly before the customer ever sees a result.
This illustrates what I would call positional collapse. Traditional SEO operated on a spectrum. Rank first or rank fifth and you still existed. AI search operates on a binary. You are on the shortlist or you do not exist. The mental model here is zero-sum retrieval. The mechanism is LLM citation selection, which is far less transparent than PageRank ever was.
Social Places, a multi-location marketing firm, published the analysis. They found that over half of Google-strong locations are absent from AI search responses.
- Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask it to recommend a business in your category in your city. Note whether you appear.
- Search yourself on Google and compare your visibility there to your visibility in the AI response. The gap is your exposure problem.
- Ensure your business listings on Google and major directories have complete, consistent NAP data. Name, address, phone. AI models pull from structured sources. Messy data means exclusion.
