Fifteen Hustles Tested. Real Wages Span $2 To $30. Gas And Unpaid Time Eat A Third.
MoneyPantry ran a standardized formula across 15 side hustles including Uber, DoorDash, freelance writing, AI training, plasma donation, and online surveys. After accounting for fees, vehicle costs, and unpaid time, real hourly pay ranged from roughly $2 to $30. Freelance writing and AI training landed near the top. Delivery and survey gigs landed near the bottom, where they belong.
This demonstrates the Gross vs. Net Wage Fallacy. People compare headline rates without accounting for hidden costs like fuel, platform fees, and dead time between tasks. The mental model here is Total Cost of Earning. You must subtract every unreimbursed expense and every unpaid hour before judging whether a hustle is worth your time. The gap between gross and net is where bad decisions live.
Saeed Darabi at MoneyPantry has tested or researched hundreds of money-making methods since 2013, reaching over 63 million readers. The analysis applied one consistent formula across all 15 hustles to ensure comparability.
- List any side hustle you currently do or are considering, then write down every hidden cost it involves including gas, platform fees, equipment, and unpaid prep or wait time.
- Track one full week of actual hours spent including unpaid time, then divide your total earnings by those total hours.
- Compare your calculated real hourly rate to your local minimum wage. If your hustle pays less than that after costs, the math is telling you something the marketing did not.
