The Friend pendant, a $249 wearable AI companion from a startup best known for its controversial ad campaign, now features a speaker so it can talk to you directly from the device itself. Previously its randomized personality and voice only reached you through push notifications via a companion app. The large circular puck still maintains an always-on design, which I am sure will end well for everyone involved.

This illustrates a principle I call Forced Intimacy Escalation. The product was already socially awkward, as even its own launch video demonstrated. Rather than addressing that core problem, the company added a speaker. The mechanism at work is the false assumption that reducing friction in a fundamentally unwanted interaction makes that interaction desirable. It does not. It makes it more intrusive. The lesson: identify whether your product solves a real problem before adding features that amplify a nonexistent one.
