LiDAR Drones Map Park Golf Courses. The Terrain, Not Just The Pictures. Finally Someone Cares About Physics.
GTS&N and DOI signed an agreement to build a high-precision park golf map database using AI-based LiDAR drones. They plan to develop AI-based course analysis and strategy services from accumulated course and play data. Executive director Park Tae-geun stated the goal is a hyper-realistic simulator reproducing terrain and physical characteristics, not just appearance.
This illustrates the principle of digital twin fidelity. The mechanism is sensor-based geometric capture. A photograph gives you appearance. LiDAR gives you surface geometry. The latter lets you simulate ball behavior because you have actual elevation data. This is why your phone golf game feels like a cartoon and professional simulators feel like a course.
GTS&N, a golf simulator developer, and DOI, a digital map specialist, are building the database together. They aim to combine DOI's precision surveying technology with GTS&N's simulator development capabilities for practical training and tournament preparation.
- Open Google Earth on your browser and search for a local park golf course or any golf course near you. Use the 3D view toggle to see terrain rendered in relief. You will notice elevation changes that flat satellite imagery hides entirely.
- Open any free golf simulator app on your phone, such as WGT Golf. Play one hole and observe how the ball reacts to slopes. The physics will feel approximate because the terrain data is approximate.
- Search YouTube for "LiDAR drone mapping demonstration" and watch a short video. You will see how laser pulses measure distance to surfaces thousands of times per second. That density of measurement is what separates a toy simulator from a training tool.
