AI Commentator Debuts At Pro Golf Event. It Has A Bad Scottish Accent. The Audience Deserved Better.
A professional golf event deployed an AI-generated commentator for the first time, producing awkward silences followed by shouted commentary in a poor Scottish accent. Viewer reaction was overwhelmingly negative, with observers noting that nobody who watches golf or any sport wants this repeated. The consensus was that producers should stick to real human beings calling the action.
This is a textbook case of the Automation Uncanny Valley. The mechanism is simple. When AI attempts a deeply human performative role like sports commentary, audiences immediately detect the missing emotional intelligence and contextual timing. The lesson is that not every human activity benefits from algorithmic replacement, and forcing the fit produces revulsion rather than novelty.
The AI commentator was deployed at a pro golf event, though the specific manufacturer and event name are not detailed in the source. Viewer and media reaction was uniformly negative.
- Open a free text-to-speech tool like ElevenLabs and type a few sentences of golf commentary in a Scottish dialect.
- Play it back alongside a muted golf clip on YouTube and notice how the timing feels wrong, with no awareness of dramatic pauses.
- Compare that experience to a real commentator clip and you will immediately hear why contextual emotional intelligence remains irreplaceable in live sports.
