AI Recommends Your Brand. It Credits Someone Else. Welcome To Modern Visibility.
Shero Commerce, a Shopify SEO agency, analyzed 1,851 citations across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. A mere 2.8% of those citations pointed to brand-owned pages. The AI tools recommend brands fine. They simply prefer to source those recommendations from third-party websites rather than official ones.
This demonstrates what I would call the citation displacement problem. The mechanism at work is source authority bias: AI systems aggregate from domains they trust, not from domains that sell the product. The lesson, which should be obvious, is that brand visibility now depends on being talked about elsewhere, not merely existing on your own site. Build your presence on platforms you do not control. That is where the AI actually looks.
Shero Commerce, a Shopify agency specializing in SEO and AI services, conducted the citation analysis. The study covered Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity but did not determine why AI systems prefer certain sources over others.
- Search for your brand name in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Note which websites the AI cites as its source for information about you.
- Visit the third-party sites that appear most often in those citations. Check whether your brand is mentioned, reviewed, or listed there.
- Identify one site where your brand is absent and submit a listing, review request, or editorial pitch. The goal is to become visible on the sources the AI already trusts.
