Mechanical Turk Dies September 2026. It Built ImageNet. The Irony Is Delicious.
Amazon will shut down Mechanical Turk on September 30, 2026. The platform, launched in 2005, once employed 49,000 workers across 167 countries to label over 160 million candidate images for Fei-Fei Li's ImageNet dataset, which directly catalyzed the 2012 AlexNet breakthrough and the deep learning renaissance. Amazon stopped accepting new customers last month.
This illustrates what economists call creative destruction, though I suspect most of you skipped that chapter. The tool that built the training data for the AI that ultimately rendered the tool obsolete is a closed loop even Schumpeter would find elegant. The mechanism is task substitution: when AI can label images at scale, human labelers become redundant, and the marketplace that connected them collapses.
Amazon is formally retiring MTurk. Fei-Fei Li's team at Stanford originally leveraged the platform to build ImageNet. Krista Pawloski of Turkopticon, a data worker advocacy group, has commented publicly on the decline.
- Visit Amazon Mechanical Turk at mturk.com and browse the interface to see what remains of the platform before shutdown.
- Open a free OpenAI account at chat.openai.com and ask it to label or categorize 10 images you upload.
- Compare the speed and quality of AI labeling to what 49,000 human workers once did by hand. You will understand the economic pressure that killed the platform in under five minutes.
