Claude 3.5 Sonnet Sees Your Screen. It Moves Your Mouse. The Implications Are Obvious.
Anthropic released Claude 3.5 Sonnet with a capability they rather delicately call "computer use." The model can observe your screen, control your mouse, and type on your keyboard. This means spreadsheet manipulation, file organization, and web tasks can now be automated without writing a single line of code. Previously you needed expensive RPA platforms for this. Now you need a conversation.
This demonstrates what I would call agentic perception-action coupling, if you must have a term for it. The model doesn't just generate text about a task. It perceives a graphical interface, reasons about it, and takes physical actions within it. The mental model here is that AI is transitioning from oracle to operator. You used to ask it questions. Now you hand it the steering wheel. The mechanism is straightforward: vision plus action plus feedback loops. What used to require enterprise budgets now requires a chat window.
Anthropic built and released this. The capability is available through their API and demonstrated on their site at anthropic.com/news/3-5-models-and-computer-use.
- Visit Anthropic's announcement page and review the computer use demo to understand what the model can do on a desktop.
- Open Claude and describe a repetitive desktop task you perform, such as organizing files by date or copying data between two spreadsheets.
- Ask Claude to walk you through automating that task step by step, even without direct computer use access, to see how it reasons about interface elements and action sequences.
