Apple Built a Whoop Clone in Secret. It Hasn't Decided to Ship It. Indecision at Scale Is Still Indecision.

Apple has been exploring the screenless fitness tracker category for months and has developed prototypes, according to Bloomberg, but has not committed to bringing the product to market. The device would resemble Whoop's wrist-worn bands, which offer 24/7 monitoring without any display. If Apple does greenlight the project, the earliest launch would be 2028.

This demonstrates the concept of prototyping as optionality. Apple develops hardware it may never sell, which is not waste but strategic hedging. The mechanism is called real options reasoning. You build prototypes to preserve the right to ship later without obligating yourself to ship now. The reader should understand that most corporate R&D is designed to be discarded, not deployed.

Apple is the entity prototyping, with Bloomberg as the reporting source. Whoop is the reference competitor, manufacturing wrist-worn trackers with continuous monitoring and no screen.
