AI Commentator Joins the Booth. Humans Still Get Top Billing. Better Listen Than Talk, Clearly.
The 2026 New Mexico Open plans to put Duff Foreman, billed as the first AI golf commentator, alongside PGA Tour winner Notah Begay III and broadcaster Ryan Burr. The AI is expected to handle nine hours of live coverage across five streams for a 140-player field chasing a record $137,000 purse at Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort.
This demonstrates the principle of adjacent autonomy. The AI does not replace the broadcast. It fills a gap humans find tedious. The mechanism is called task delegation to synthetic agents, and it works best when the human remains the authority while the machine handles volume. You should learn this pattern because it is coming to every profession, not just golf.
The New Mexico Open, with Duff Foreman AI joining Notah Begay III and Ryan Burr for live coverage, September 14 through 16, 2026.
- Open ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to commentate on your last round of golf or any sport you played, in the voice of a broadcast announcer.
- Feed it details like course name, weather, and your scores to see how it adapts the commentary.
- Ask it to analyze your shot selection and suggest better strategy. You will experience the same adjacent autonomy concept, just without the live audience.
