SGLAB Stuffs Sensors Into a Golf Shaft. Stirling Gets £13,000 of Clubs. Pressure Mapping Is the Point, Naturally.
SGLAB has equipped the University of Stirling with over £13,000 in golf technology for the Centre for Research and Innovation in Sport. The G·GRIP system places pressure sensors inside the grip and motion sensors within the shaft, measuring how a golfer holds and moves the club throughout the swing. This is biomechanical instrumentation dressed up as a golf club. Rather clever, actually.
The mechanism here is multimodal sensing: combining pressure data with kinematic data produces a richer signal than either alone. This is the same principle behind everything from fitness wearables to industrial quality control. When you can measure two correlated variables simultaneously, you capture causal relationships that single-sensor approaches miss entirely. The undergrads should write that down.
SGLAB, supplying the G·GRIP sensor-instrumented clubs, and the University of Stirling's Centre for Research and Innovation in Sport, conducting the performance analysis research.
- Download a free golf swing analysis app such as Golf SwingAnalyzer on your phone. Record three swings in slow motion. You will see basic kinematic data like swing speed and plane angle.
- Hold your phone in your grip hand and swing. Compare the phone's accelerometer readings to the video. Notice how a single sensor captures only part of the story.
- Write down what you cannot measure without pressure sensors on your grip. You now understand why SGLAB's dual-sensor approach matters.
