Mueller Tests Markdown For AI Crawlers. Only SEO Bots Showed Up. No Evidence Whatsoever.
Google's John Mueller published Markdown versions of webpages to test whether AI crawlers would consume them more readily. The only bots that hit his Markdown files were from SEO tools, not AI agents. There is zero evidence that serving Markdown improves AI citations or AI search rankings.
This illustrates a principle I like to call format fetishism. Marketers obsess over file formats when the actual ranking signals live elsewhere. The mechanism here is signal verification. Before you optimize for a hypothetical crawler behavior, confirm the crawler actually requests that format. Mueller just saved you months of pointless engineering.
Google's John Mueller, a 25-year SEO veteran, ran the test himself and shared results publicly. The only visitors to his Markdown files were SEO tool bots, not AI agents.
- Open your server access logs or ask your hosting provider how to view bot requests. Look for which user agents are actually crawling your site.
- Search the logs for any major AI bot names like GPTBot or ClaudeBot. Note whether any of them request .md or Markdown files specifically.
- Compare that to how many SEO tool bots you see. If no AI bot is requesting Markdown, do not spend time creating Markdown versions of your pages.
