The share of L&D professionals using AI went from roughly 5% in 2023 to 84% within about a year. The recommended approach is deliberately small. Pick one low-stakes task, try it once, and read the output like a first draft from a new hire.
This illustrates what I would call the Single-Task Entry Principle. The mechanism is simple. Cognitive load drops when you constrain the scope of experimentation to one task rather than redesigning your entire workflow. Most people fail at AI adoption because they attempt transformation when they should attempt iteration. Start small. Evaluate. Decide if it earns a second try. That is how learning works. - Pick one low-stakes task this week. Write a draft email summary, a meeting recap, or a training outline. Something with no regulatory consequences.
- Open any consumer AI chatbot. Type your request with specific context. What role, what audience, what format. Treat the output as a first draft from a competent but inexperienced junior employee.
- Edit the result. Note how long the whole process took versus doing it from scratch. If it saved time, try again next week with a different task. If it did not, you picked the wrong task.
