Apple Intelligence Gets Tested. Writing Tools Saves It. The Hardware Sales Pitch Falls Apart.
A PCMag reviewer tested every Apple Intelligence feature across iOS 27, including Siri AI, image generation, custom extensions, and workout tools. The standout finding is that you do not need new hardware to get Apple's biggest upgrades. Writing Tools works anywhere you can enter text, and it directly leverages AI for automations.
This demonstrates the principle of software decoupled from hardware. The mechanism is feature partitioning, where the valuable intelligence lives in the OS layer, not the silicon. The lesson: stop buying devices for AI. Buy the software update.
Chris Hoffman at PCMag conducted the hands-on testing across Apple Intelligence features. The findings suggest Apple's AI strategy prioritizes broad deployment over hardware exclusivity.
- Update your existing iPhone to iOS 27 through Settings > General > Software Update. Expected outcome: Apple Intelligence features become available without purchasing a new device.
- Open any app where you can type text, such as Notes or Mail, and select the text field to invoke Writing Tools. Expected outcome: AI-powered writing suggestions and automation options appear inline.
- Try Siri with a compound request like 'Create a reminder and set a timer for 20 minutes.' Expected outcome: Siri processes the multi-step instruction using the new AI backend.
