SMB AI Adoption Hit 66 Percent. Most Still Have No Idea What They Are Doing. The Gap Is the Story.
Thryv's 2026 AI and Small Business Adoption Survey reports SMB adoption climbed from 55% in 2025 to 66% in 2026. Among users, 70% report increased revenue and 92% say AI saves time. Yet a majority admit they could benefit from training to use AI more effectively. Most are doing basic tasks like asking ChatGPT questions or generating social posts, while better prompting, data protection, content evaluation, and workflow integration remain largely untouched.
This illustrates what I call the adoption proficiency gap. The mechanism is the Dunning-Kruger effect applied to technology: early wins create false confidence, and the majority of users plateau at surface level usage. Adoption numbers measure access. They do not measure competence. The businesses that learn prompt engineering, data hygiene, and workflow integration will compound their advantage while the rest congratulate themselves for asking ChatGPT to write a caption.
Thryv conducted the 2026 AI and Small Business Adoption Survey, which found the 55% to 66% adoption increase, the 70% revenue figure, and the 92% time savings figure among SMBs surveyed.
- Open ChatGPT and write a prompt for something you already do, like a social media post. Then rewrite that prompt with specific constraints: tone, length, target audience, and a clear instruction about what to avoid. Compare both outputs.
- Before pasting any business data into an AI tool, remove anything sensitive. Names, numbers, addresses. Replace them with placeholders. This is called data hygiene and most people never bother.
- Pick one weekly task and build a reusable prompt template for it. Save it in a document. Use it every week. That is workflow integration, and it is where the actual returns compound.
