Product Pages Grab 24% Of AI Citations. Reddit Manages 4%. The Gap Survives Scrutiny, Unlike Most Of These Studies.
A Ten Speed study found product pages earn roughly six times more B2B AI citations than Reddit or YouTube, which each captured about 4%. The researchers behind this particular study subjected their findings to six pointed fact-check questions, and the numbers held up. The author notes that most AI citation studies published this year would not survive that level of pushback.
This illustrates what I call epistemic stress testing. A finding that survives hostile interrogation is categorically more reliable than one that survives only a press release cycle. The mechanism here is falsification pressure. You should never build a budget around a single study unless someone has actively tried to break it and failed.
Ten Speed conducted the study. The column author, identified as the former president of SEO-PR, spent over two decades advising clients against single-study strategies and notes this study confirms that advice rather than contradicting it.
- Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity and ask it to recommend B2B products in a specific category. Note which domains it cites and whether they are product pages, forums, or video platforms.
- Search Google for the same query and compare the top organic results to the AI cited sources. You will likely see a divergence in source types.
- Repeat with three more B2B queries and tally the citation sources by category. Your mini-study will not survive six fact-check emails, but it will teach you the methodology in under 15 minutes.
