SerpApi Ships Markdown Output. Halves Token Cost. The Format Does The Work, Not The Model.
SerpApi introduced Markdown formatting across 100-plus APIs, reducing token consumption for LLMs and AI agents by roughly 50 percent on average. The company reports 1.5 million activated user accounts, meaning this lands on a developer base that already exists. Converting structured data into compact text is not a breakthrough. It is a sensible efficiency.
The mechanism here is representation compression. When you feed an LLM the same information in fewer tokens, you pay less, wait less, and lose nothing semantically. The mental model: format is a lever. A model does not care whether your data arrives as verbose JSON or clean Markdown. Your wallet does.
SerpApi, a search API provider with over 1.5 million activated accounts, rolled out Markdown output across its 100-plus API catalog. Their own claim is approximately 50 percent token reduction on average.
- Open any chatbot and paste a 200-line JSON snippet from a public API. Note how long the response takes and how much text the model echoes back.
- Convert that same JSON to Markdown by hand or with a free converter, keeping only the content fields. Paste the Markdown version into the same chatbot with the same prompt.
- Compare response times and output verbosity. You will find the model processes the same information with less overhead. That is the entire lesson.
