Stability AI drops Stable Diffusion 3 Medium weights for local use

What happened

Stability AI released the full model weights for Stable Diffusion 3 Medium. Users can download and run the model locally on consumer hardware or inexpensive cloud GPUs. This eliminates per-image generation fees and cloud dependency.

Why it matters

This teaches the fundamental trade-off between convenience and control in AI workflows. Running models locally means upfront setup cost in exchange for zero marginal cost and no content filtering by a remote provider. You should evaluate whether your use case benefits from this sovereignty or merely tolerates cloud friction.

Who's doing it

Stability AI, the London-based open-source generative AI company led by CEO Prem Akkaraju. They released SD3 Medium weights in June 2024.

Try it

  1. Download ComfyUI or Automatic1111, free open-source interfaces that run Stable Diffusion.
  2. Visit stability.ai and locate the SD3 Medium download page; obtain the model weights file (approximately 2 billion parameters, manageable on 8GB VRAM).
  3. Load the weights into your chosen interface, enter a text prompt, and generate an image without network connection. Expected outcome: You produce an image entirely on your hardware, paying nothing per generation.
