The goal shifts from ranking in search results to getting mentioned and recommended by AI tools when customers ask questions. Google itself has stated that traditional SEO best practices remain foundational to appearing in its generative AI search features.
This illustrates a principle I call 'surface migration, substrate persistence.' The interface layer changes. The ranking substrate does not. If your content is not discoverable, understandable, and authoritative by classical SEO standards, no AI answer engine will rescue you. Master the fundamentals before chasing the new acronym.

- Open ChatGPT or Claude and ask it to recommend a product or service in your industry. Note whether your business appears and what sources the AI cites.
- Search Google for your target keywords and check whether your site ranks on page one. If not, that gap explains your absence from AI answers too.
- Identify the top three websites the AI cited in step one. Visit them and compare their content depth, structure, and clarity to yours. The gap you find is your AEO roadmap, which is also just your SEO roadmap.
