Scotland's golf industry, which depends heavily on golfers researching trips, equipment, and courses, now faces the prospect of AI summarizing answers directly rather than directing traffic to club websites.
This illustrates what I would call the disintermediation of search. The mechanism is straightforward: when AI models summarize information rather than link out, the websites that produced the underlying knowledge lose their audience. The mental model you need is this. Traffic was never yours to begin with. It was rented from Google. Now the landlord is renovating.
