Fitbit Air Gets A Plastic Pebble And Gemini Brain. The Coach Still Stutters. Wearable It Anyway.
The Fitbit Air launched in May with a lightweight design, long battery life, and 24/7 wearability, but notably lacks GPS tracking for runs. Google rebuilt the Fitbit app around a Gemini-powered AI health coach, rebranding it as Google Health. The AI coach remains inconsistently reliable, and the device's pebble module is plastic, which keeps it lightweight and cheap.
This demonstrates the integration gap between hardware and AI. Google bolted a large language model onto a fitness tracker and called it a coach, but the AI's inconsistency reveals a fundamental truth. Strapping a frontier model to a sensor does not automatically produce reliable health guidance. The mental model is capability mismatch. The hardware collects data fine. The AI interprets it poorly. The gap between sensing and sense-making remains the hard problem.

- If you own any Fitbit or similar wearable, open its companion app and locate the AI coaching or insights feature. Read its recommendations for the past week.
- Take those same recommendations and paste your raw step, heart rate, or sleep data into ChatGPT or Claude. Ask for health insights based on the numbers.
- Compare the two outputs side by side. You will likely find the standalone AI gives more detailed analysis, illustrating exactly where the Fitbit Air's built-in coach falls short.
