AI Search Eats Your Traffic. Now You Need AEO Too. The Acronym Is Real, Sadly.
AI search tools are reducing organic traffic for businesses, which has created demand for a practice called AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization. Ahrefs offers a feature called Brand Radar that connects AI mention and citation research with existing keyword, backlink, and competitive SEO datasets. SE Ranking appears as another tool in this category.
This illustrates a concept I like to call citation displacement. When an AI summarizes an answer directly, the user never clicks through to your site. The underlying mechanism is intermediation: the search layer inserts itself between you and your audience. You must now optimize not for clicks but for mentions within the AI's synthesized output. Your brand visibility has been demoted from destination to footnote.

- Go to ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask it a question your business would normally answer. Note whether your brand appears in the response.
- Search the same query on Google and compare which sites rank versus which sources the AI cites.
- Identify one gap where competitors are mentioned by the AI but you are not. That gap is your first AEO project.
