Well, Actually: A Golf Tournament Will Let Algorithms Call the Shots
📰 THE BRIEF
The 2026 New Mexico Open may deploy an AI broadcaster for play-by-play commentary. KOAT reports this would mark a first for professional golf. The system in question is Duff Foreman, an AI commentary tool.
💡 WHY IT MATTERS
This illustrates the encroachment of synthetic media into live event production. You should consider how voice synthesis and real-time data parsing can reduce production costs. The technique forces you to ask what human commentators add that algorithms cannot replicate.
👥 WHO'S DOING IT
The New Mexico Open golf tournament is implementing this, per KOAT. Duff Foreman is the named AI commentary system. No results from actual deployment were reported.
⚡ TRY IT
- Open a free trial of ElevenLabs or Play.ht and generate thirty seconds of sports commentary from a pasted paragraph of match statistics.
- Record yourself reading the same statistics, then compare pacing and emotional inflection.
- Feed live sports data from a site like ESPN into a chatbot and prompt it to generate running commentary, noting the delay and factual accuracy.
