Stupa's Badminton IRS Hits 99 Percent Accuracy. Certification Follows. The Other One Percent Is Where The Arguments Live.
Gurugram-based Stupa Sports built the Table Tennis Review system, making UTT only the second table tennis league globally to adopt dedicated AI officiating. Since partnering with UTT in 2019, they added AI-powered live statistics, shot-speed analytics in Season 5, and an Instant Review System for badminton certified by the Badminton World Federation at 99 percent accuracy in March. They are now expanding into rugby as well.
This demonstrates the principle of computational adjudication, where sensor-derived data replaces human perception in high-stakes decisions. The mechanism is straightforward: computer vision systems process visual input faster and more consistently than biological optics. What this teaches you is that AI excels precisely where human judgment is most fallible, namely split-second calls under pressure.
Stupa Sports, based in Gurugram, partnered with UTT starting in Season 3 of 2019 and received BWF certification for their badminton IRS at 99 percent accuracy in March. They have progressively expanded from data management into shot-speed analytics and officiating across table tennis, badminton, and rugby.
- Open any AI image generator and upload a photo of a ball near a line or boundary. Ask it to determine whether the ball is in or out. Note the confidence level it reports.
- Repeat with five similar photos from different angles. Count how often the AI agrees with your own visual judgment.
- Compare your accuracy rate to Stupa's certified 99 percent. You will likely find the AI more consistent than your eyes, which is precisely the point.
